THE FORD MODEL "T"

The Ford cars ave always been popular amongst the common people. The reasons are many - Their low costs, safety, comfort, and their life.

This journey started with the Ford Model T in 1908.

This car laid the foundation of the modern Assmbly-line production and turned out to bo a major economic phenomenon.

The cars at that time were not considered for a common man. The designers hesitated to design a cheap car. The preferred making luxurious cars for the rich. Thus their costs were also high. The average cost of a car used to be about $800.

At this time, Henry Ford introduced his 2.9 litre, 4 cylinder car for just $200-$250.

This low cost was attained by elminating all the luxury from it. It produced 20hp to go at the top speed of 72 km/hr. This was a good speed at the offered price and was good enough for a common man to commute.

The other factor that reduced the price was the ASSEMBLY LINE PRODUCTION. Model T was the first car to be produced through an assembly line. Mr. Ford got this idea from a butchershop where the meat was taken, washed and packed in different stages at different places.

This reduced the prices because now Henry Ford could produce more cars with lesser men. In those days the average output of a car factory was 20-30 vehicles per day and Ford could produce 100-150 cars per day.

This factor led to a beautiful strategy which required least of advertising.
As he now required leser workforce he reduced the working hours from 10 to 08 hours a day and also increased their wages from $3 to $5 per day.
Everywhere at that time working hours were 10hr/day and the wages were not more than $3 a day.
This attracted the best workers from whole of America. So the production was booming.

As these workers now had had more mony and more time to travel, they bought this car and that too at a subsidised price.
The Model t of these workers automaticaly advertised for itself and as the car was a good vehical already it attracted more buyers.

This car became the largest owned vehical.

Model T was produced continoously from September 27,1908 till 1927. The production was stopped because it was hindering the sale of other Ford's cars.

Mr. ford once said praising its simplicity -" You can paint it in any colour."
